The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Military Psychology around the country.
What We Do
Military psychologists help service members to cope with emotional experience that may occur during their combat and service. They help individuals in maintaining good mental health, and may also be involved with psychological research. In most circumstances, their employment requirements will be the same as any other psychologists, though they will also need additional military-based training.
Work Environment
Many psychologists in the military will work on a full-time basis. Although they can work both inside and outside of the military, they will always work alongside military personnel both on and off the field of duty.
How to Become a Military Psychology
Becoming a military psychologist is a process that requires much of the same education involved in becoming a civilian psychologist. This will include licensing which must be regularly renewed. It is suggested that a psychologist must be able to achieve a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Psychology, or a Doctor of Psychology degree in order to practice. The final education requirement that military psychologists need is an internship within a certain military branch. Each area highlights specific types of service, but all will involve some field training.
Training & Certification Requirements
Beyond earning their degrees within the field of psychology, and completing an internship with their chosen military branch, military psychologists will also be required to obtain their state license if they want to practice in their local area. Though the specific requirements for these might vary according to states, most of the time, a license will be given to anyone who can show that they are able to successfully complete an accredited doctoral degree program in their psychological specialty, alongside an internship. What’s more, candidates will be expected to pass licensing exams. While specific certification by a board is not necessarily required for military psychologists, voluntarily obtaining your certification can offer you several career advantages. It’s also a credential that can be transferred to other jobs that exist beyond the military. The people who want to obtain a certification will need to pass an exam, have a professional license, and obtain a doctoral degree.
