What We Do
A neuropsychologist studies how mental health conditions, developmental disorders, brain disease, and brain injuries can affect thinking and behavior. This health professional conducts tests to determine how these conditions have affected an individual. Additionally, they devise treatment methods to improve their outcomes.
Work Environment
Neuropsychology is a very specialized field of psychology. As a result, the majority of neuropsychologists work either in a clinical setting in private, state, or local hospitals, in research, or in educational institutions.
How to Become a Neuropsychology
Becoming a neuropsychologist requires candidates to obtain a doctorate degree. Two degrees exist in this field. One is the Ph.D., which is the research degree, and the other is the Psy.D., which is the clinical degree. It is important, therefore, that those who want to become involved in the field of neuropsychology understand which direction they really want to go to before they decide to enroll in a particular doctorate degree.
Training & Certification Requirements
In order for someone to call themselves a “psychologist”, they generally have to be licensed in most states. Additionally, in all states, people who wish to practice independently have to be fully licensed. Every state does have its own licensing requirements in place, which also highlight how much training they must have received, and what level of supervised work they underwent. Generally speaking, those with a license must maintain it through continuous education credits. Neuropsychologists are generally certified by the American Board of Professional Certification as well. This is not generally a required certification, but it does show professionalism and dedication to improving the standards of the field.
