The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Psychiatry around the country.
What We Do
Psychiatrists are a form of licensed medical professional responsible for treating and diagnosing mental problems and illnesses. Alongside prescribing medication for mental health conditions, these professionals may use a range of psychiatric treatments including psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. Work can be particularly challenging for these individuals when working with uncooperative or violent patients.
Work Environment
Professional psychiatrists might choose to work from their own office, from a medical hospital, or from a psychiatric hospital. Some also find jobs within an outpatient care center, or for state or local government agencies. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics (BLS), there were around 25,040 psychiatrists in the US in 2013.
How to Become a Psychiatry
Aspiring psychiatrists will need to begin their journey towards such a career by taking undergraduate courses in chemistry, biology, physics and math in order to obtain the medical school admissions requirements. Though a bachelor’s degree of any kind can be acceptable for med school, majoring in a science or pre-medical field will offer you the best preparation for medical school. You will also need to attend four years of medical school in order to earn your doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathic medicine degree.
Training & Certification Requirements
Once you have earned your degree as a doctor of medicine or doctor of psychiatry, you will need to participate within a residency in a hospital or clinical setting. Most psychiatric programs for residency will last for a period of four years and will consist of a combination of practical behaviors and didactic learning. The individuals in these training programs will receive lessons in a number of different disciplines, including forensic psychology, neurology, and chemical dependency, before you focus on psychiatry. Psychiatrists are also required to obtain a professional license through their state’s medical board in order to be allowed to practice psychiatry in all states. Most states will have their own specific licensure requirements, but you will usually need to pass an examination that tests your understanding of medical practices and regulations. What’s more, while additional board certification through the American board of psychiatry and neurology is considered voluntary, becoming certified could improve your options for employment.
