What We Do
The field of quantitative psychology centers around using mathematical and statistical measurements and models in order to analyze gathered data for the purpose of studying the human psyche or mind. It is also often called “psychometrics”. Quantitative psychology is very different from clinical or counseling psychology, which focuses on providing people with treatment for mental disorders or helping them to overcome certain issues. With quantitative psychology, by contrast, the focus is on statistics, mathematics, and research.
Work Environment
The majority of quantitative psychologists work for private testing or research companies. Some may also work for government agencies, universities, or colleges, but only if they have completed a doctorate degree. Most have comfortable offices, as well as working in state of the art labs. Many divide their time between teaching and performing research.
How to Become a Quantitative Psychology
To become a quantitative psychologist, you must first complete a four year bachelor’s degree. While this does not have to be in psychology, it is often recommended to build a strong foundation in this particular subject area. After the bachelor’s degree, you must enroll in a two year master’s degree, where you can choose the medical psychology specialization. In order to call yourself a psychologist, you must also complete a doctoral degree, with is either the research based Ph.D., or the clinically based Psy.D. The Ph.D. is the most relevant degree for quantitative psychology, as it is a research based field of work. However, some people can find work as a quantitative psychologist with just a master’s degree, although they may not call themselves “psychologists”.
Training & Certification Requirements
Each state has its own requirements in terms of licenses and certification for quantitative psychologists. The American Psychological Association and the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards both list what the requirements within each state are. Certification is usually valid for a certain period of time only, and must be maintained either through proof of continuous education credits, or by retaking the examination.
