The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a School Psychology around the country.
What We Do
School psychologists are health professionals who conduct testing to help determine student placement within special-needs classes, and provide individual or group counseling, conduct personality and educational assessments, and help to address issues regarding behavior in the classroom. These individuals need to be comfortable working alongside children, and many will work full time.
Work Environment
In most circumstances, a school psychologist will typically find work within an elementary, middle school, or high school position. Some also work within early childhood programs, and others work within community living centers. These professionals are responsible for working alongside children who have behavioral problems, and will also be required to communicate with teachers in identifying gifted children, or those with learning disorders. Some school psychologists will visit parents and collaborate with teachers outside of the school environment.
How to Become a School Psychology
In order to become a school psychologist a student must begin by earning their bachelor’s degree in psychology, following by a specialist level of master’s degree and state licensure for their entry-level psychology position. Students who have an interest in conducting research at a university level or teaching will also need to consider earning a doctoral degree. All psychologists who choose to work alongside clients or patients including school psychologists will have to meet licensing requirements for their states, and pass the education and experience requirements set by their state.
Training & Certification Requirements
The national certification of school psychologist credential is provided by the National Association of School Psychologists. For professionals to earn this credential, they must first complete a graduate program followed by their internship in school psychology. These professionals must also earn a passing score on a psychology exam in school circumstances. The Nationally Certified School Psychologist is currently a voluntary certification, but it is required by many states to be considered for a career. School psychologists must also be licensed by the state. Although licensure requirements are usually very similar, it is important to check up on what is needed within your specific state to earn licensure before you continue with your education.
