What We Do
Hospice nurses are a form of registered nurse who is responsible for providing care to terminally ill patients. These individuals work alongside families, their patients, and other healthcare professionals during the final stages of the patients’ life. Hospice nurses are also involved in maintaining the quality and comfort of life for patients with terminal diseases.
Work Environment
Hospice nurses can find employment within a range of different environments but most commonly they will find job positions within private homes, nursing centers, hospice care environments, and residential care facilities. These professionals may also spend time supervising licensed vocational nurses and offering help to aides in hospital settings.
How to Become a Hospice Nursing
Earning your career as a hospice nurse requires education and training, as well as the ability to become a registered nurse. To become a registered nurse will require completion of undergraduate education, as well as gaining relevant work experience in their chosen field. Options for people in this industry might include obtaining a bachelor of science in nursing degree or an associate degree in nursing. A combination of training and classroom education is usually necessary. Many hospice nurses will also consider pursuing a master’s degree in palliative and hospice nursing. Those who do get their master’s degree are generally considered to be advanced practice nurses instead of registered nurses, and therefore they can apply for higher paying jobs, and become involved with specialties such as acute care and psychology.
Training & Certification Requirements
In order to become a registered nurse, which is the minimum requirement for a hospice nurse, individuals will be expected to pass the national council licensing examination for registered nurses. This is required by every state and passing the exam proves that nurses have the skills and knowledge required to perform the duties of a nurse. Employers might also ask for additional certification from people who want to provide hospice level care. The National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses currently offers a certification for hospice nurses. What’s more, hospice experience and a currently maintained RN license is necessary for all certification exams, and renewal will become essential every four years.
