How to Become a Long Term Care Nurse Practitioner
Those who want to become long term care nurse practitioners will need to begin by earning a diploma or bachelor’s degree in nursing. While diploma programs can be limited in number and administered by healthcare facilities, bachelor programs and associate degree programs are offered by a range of post secondary institutions, and offer a combination of classroom education and hands-on experience within a clinical setting. This should be followed by a master’s degree in nursing, which specialization in long term care.
Training & Certification Requirements
After a nursing degree program has been successfully completed, someone with an interest in becoming a long term care nurse practitioner will be able to take the exam to obtain a license. All states require that nurses have to be licensed before they can begin to provide care legally as a nurse. Obtaining your license will require you to pass the exam for registered nurses. Those who want to become long term care nurses will also need to complete advanced programs, such as master of science in nursing with specialization in gerontology. This will allow them to become advanced practice nurses and often earn a higher wage due to a greater amount of responsibility at work.
