What We Do
Neonatal nurse practitioners generally work alongside premature and newborn babies, ensuring that everything is done to improve and maintain their health. These health professionals will work with infants up to two years of age, and their tasks are often performed alongside the parents of the infants, and physicians. Alongside checking vital signs, you will be trained to use oxygen, incubators, ventilators, and intravenous devices.
Work Environment
Most neonatal nurse practitioners will work within the neonatal section of a hospital or emergency care facility. They will either work in the newborn nursery with healthy babies, in the intensive care unit for seriously sick newly born babies, or in a general part of the hospital.
How to Become a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner
Those who are planning to become neonatal nurse practitioners will need to begin their career by earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing, followed by a graduate program, particularly a master’s of nursing degree with specialization in neonatal nursing. These educational programs at the graduate level will typically take two years to complete, and candidates for such degrees will be required to hold both a registered nursing license and a number of years of experience in nursery care. It is worth looking up what your preferred school would be in regards to entry requirements before applying for a position.
Training & Certification Requirements
Once you have completed your master’s degree in nursing focusing on neonatal care, you should be fully prepared to take the neonatal nurse practitioner board examination. This examination will evaluate and test the knowledge and skills of a candidate neonatal nurse practitioner. All states will require some manner of certification, which forms part of the licensure process. Neonatal nurse practitioners will already have some manner of registered nursing license. However, they will also be required to obtain an advanced nurse practitioner license. Requirements for applicants to this certification will vary according to state, but most prerequisites include being a graduate from a master’s program and having national certification.
