What We Do
Nursing informatics is about improving the way communication and information is managed in the field of nursing. Their goal is to boost quality of patient care while cutting costs and improving efficiency at the same time. The discipline integrates information science, computer science, and nursing science. It specializes in integrating data, information, and knowledge, thereby improving overall levels of care. The main emphasis is on documentation and communication, both of which must be strong across all fields of healthcare. Communication in health settings is done through notes and charts, and a nurse informatics analyst will try to increase accuracy and speed of charting these notes. In so doing, patient notes are always accurate and up to date, leading to better decisions in terms of their treatment and care.
Work Environment
Those with a specialization in nursing informatics work across a range of healthcare facilities, including hospitals. They can also be found in corporations and in universities.
How to Become a Nursing Informatics
Most of those with a nursing informatics specialization are registered nurses (RNs) first, which means they have completed the bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) and passed the NCLEX-RN examination. Most also hold a master of science in nursing (MSN), or a master in computer or information science.
Training & Certification Requirements
The main certification requirement for someone involved in nursing informatics is the NCLEX-RN, which enables them to work as a registered nurse. However, a range of schools now also offer certifications in nursing informatics. While these are not required by law, they do place the nurse in higher standing.
