The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Oncology Nurse Practitioner around the country.
What We Do
Oncology nurse practitioners are expert individuals who become involved in the care of people, families, and groups of patients who have received a diagnosis of cancer. The role of these nurses has expanded hugely since the inception of the job during the 1950s. Now that treatment for cancer has become more multifaceted, advanced practice nurses in the role of oncology nurse practitioner may be willing to take on duties related to screening, cancer prevention, management, care, research, and more.
Work Environment
Work settings for most oncology nurse practitioners may include cancer centers, doctors’ offices, hospitals, patients’ homes, and extended care facilities. Some of these health professionals may also find employment within specialist hospice centers for oncology patients.
How to Become a Oncology Nurse Practitioner
Oncology nurse practitioners will need to be registered nurses, which means those who are planning to pursue this particular career will need to start by earning a four-year bachelor of science in nursing degree. Although more options for careers are generally offered to those with a bachelor’s degree, some people choose to start their journey with a two-year associate’s degree or diploma. In order to become a specialist oncology nurse practitioner, you will need to learn various care skills related specifically to the treatment of cancer, through clinical practice, coursework, and continued education. Once you have gained enough experience and knowledge, you will be able to take an exam to become an oncology certified nurse. In addition, a master’s degree in nursing specializing in oncology may also be needed.
Training & Certification Requirements
If you want to find a good position as an oncology nurse practitioner, you will need to complete a master of science in nursing (MSN)degree with specialization on oncology. This degree is typically obtained through a two-year graduate program. Once you have earned this degree, you will be able to seek recognition for your hard work through your state board of nursing as an advanced practice nurse. Keep in mind that oncology nurse practitioners will need at least 500 hours of supervised clinical practice in oncology, either after or during the master’s program to be eligible to take an advanced oncology certified nurse practitioner exam.
