The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for an Orthopedics Nursing around the country.
What We Do
An orthopedics nurse has a specialty in working with those who have skeletal and muscular problems. These include muscular dystrophy, arthritis, and fractured bones. Their responsibility is to assess, observe, and monitor their patients who have musculo-skeletal problems, and also to administer treatment and medication, to analyze and perform diagnostic testing, and to maintain patient records.
Work Environment
Orthopedics nurses are most often found in hospitals and large clinics that have orthopedics departments. Some healthcare facilities have specific fracture clinics, where you will also find orthopedic nurses.
How to Become an Orthopedics Nursing
An orthopedics nurse is firstly a registered nurse (RN), which means that this health professional must first complete a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree. Some employers also accept an associate’s degree in nursing, but this is being phased out. Those with a BSN have advanced leadership and communication skills and are therefore in higher demand. During the BSN, a prospective RN builds on their knowledge of disease prevention, counseling, healthcare education, health promotion, and rehabilitation. They also learn to lead healthcare teams, make confident decisions, and work alongside other medical professionals. There is also the possibility of completing the master of science in nursing (MSN) with a focus on orthopedic nursing. While this is not a requirement, it does put nurses in a greater standing and they are in even higher demand.
Training & Certification Requirements
The minimum certification for an orthopedics nurse is the NCLEX-RN, which is required in all states. Many employers, however, also prefer to see certification from the Orthopedic Nursing Certification Board. This is the only board that awards a credential for proficiency in orthopedic nurses. Those who pass this certification become Orthopedic Nurse Certified (ONC), which demonstrates to employers that they are able to provide the highest quality care. To maintain this credential, they must also complete continuous education courses, thereby demonstrating that their knowledge is always up to date.
