The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner around the country.
What We Do
Pediatric nurse practitioners are a form of advanced practice and registered nurse who have earned further certification by completing a range of graduate training. These health professionals offer primary care to children, usually under the supervision of a physician, and they can treat children from the point of infancy through to adolescence, regularly administering both curative and preventative treatment solutions for various illnesses and injuries.
Work Environment
Pediatric nurse practitioners are those who have chosen to take their training in nursing a step further with a focus on helping children. These health professionals are slightly more trained than a registered nurse, as they often have earned a master’s degree in nursing. However, they still work under the supervision of a physician in some cases. Many of these professionals are hired by doctor’s offices and hospitals to provide services to assist an individual physician or a team of doctors.
How to Become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner
In order to become a pediatric nurse practitioner, an individual must start by earning a bachelor of science degree in nursing often times options exist without the BSN. These individuals will also need to earn a master of science in nursing degree that allows them to specialize in the realm of pediatric care. More specific options for concentrations may be available in acute care, pediatric chronic care, and pediatric critical care or oncology. Pediatric nurse practitioner programs will also often require applicants to have a minimum of one year of nursing experience in a pediatric facility. Obtaining experience while making professional contacts is crucial because letters of recommendation are taken very seriously.
Training & Certification Requirements
Nurse practitioners are registered nurses and as such are required to obtain a nursing license by passing the national licensure examination to become a registered nurse. In addition, master’s degree program that such health professionals will have to take will require all applicants to provide a valid RN license. States may also provide their own requirements for licensure. Pediatric care nurse practitioners will have to become certified in their chosen specialty if they want to practice. The Pediatric Nursing Certification Board will provide primary care certification to nurse practitioners who pass their examination.
