What We Do
Perioperative nurses, or operating room nurses as they are sometimes better known, are a type of registered nurse who is responsible for assisting with patient care within the operating room. These nurses can work as a scrub nurse, who will be responsible for assisting with patient care within the operating room. Many perioperative nurses will also be responsible for managing nursing care in the OR, and helping to maintain the sterile field.
Work Environment
Perioperative nurses will often work in any area that might allow them to work alongside surgeons. These health professionals work in hospitals, physicians’ offices, home health care services, nursing care facilities, correctional facilities, and some serve in the military.
How to Become a Perioperative Nursing
Individuals who want to become registered nurses who specialize in perioperative nursing will need to complete a range of additional training options, such as a perioperative nursing fellowship. These health professionals will have to earn a bachelor of science in nursing or BSN degree. These programs will generally include classwork in nursing, microbiology, physiology, biochemistry, psychology and nutrition.
Training & Certification Requirements
There is a great deal of training involved for individuals who want to apply to become a perioperative nurse or operating nurse. These individuals will need to follow up their bachelor of science in nursing degree by taking and passing the national licensure examination in order to become a registered nurse. All nurses must be registered nurses before they can work in any state. Once you have achieved certification as a registered nurse, you will be able to apply to work as a staff nurse within a large hospital that includes a number of operating rooms. Once you have worked for at least six months in this environment, or have had up to a year of demonstrating your skills, you will be able to start applying for a position as a perioperative nurse. A lot of hospital facilities will provide in-house training for operating nurses, or you may be able to sign up for a professional perioperative certification program that might include the need to pass an exam.
