The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Radiology Nursing around the country.
What We Do
A radiology nurse is a type of nursing professional who is specifically devoted to caring for patients who undergo some form of diagnosing imaging test or radiation therapy procedure. These professionals may also be called radiologic nurses or imaging nurses. Radiology nurses often work alongside a group of other medical professionals and teams, and typically work in conjunction with specialists and physicians. Many radiology nurses also work with technicians and a range of other nurses on a regular basis.
Work Environment
The usual places wherein radiology nurses can expect to gain employment are in hospitals and emergency care facilities. However, it is worth noting that there are some dedicated diagnostic imaging facilities out there and radiation therapy centers that might be willing to hire a radiology nurse with the appropriate license, education, and credentials.
How to Become a Radiology Nursing
Those who are aspiring to become radiology nurses should note that the first step towards this career involves becoming a registered nurse. The path to doing this includes earning your bachelor of science degree in nursing. While an associate of science in nursing degree can be acceptable in a range of different circumstances, it’s worth noting that most employers will prefer candidates to undergo the additional training involved in earning their bachelor of science in nursing degree. Once you have obtained your bachelor’s level degree in nursing, you will have the education and preparation required to apply for and pass the national licensure examination for registered nurses in order to become a registered nurse. After this, all that is left is to gain experience and training in radiology.
Training & Certification Requirements
Besides earning your license as a registered nurse following the completion of an appropriate bachelor’s degree, in order to become a radiology nurse, you will need to think about getting certification. The Association for Imaging and Radiologic nurses will provide a certification for radiology nurses who have already applied for and completed the test to become a registered nurse, as well as having earned 2,000 hours of experience within a radiology setting, and at least an additional 30 hours of education in radiology.
