The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Registered Nursing around the country.
What We Do
Registered Nurses are advocates for patients and they work to improve the well-being and health of the injured and sick. Some registered nurses work in specific health settings, or on a specific body or health condition. It is not uncommon for a registered nurse to combine specialties, such as a pediatric oncology nurse who works with children who have cancer.
Work Environment
About half of the registered nurses in the U.S. currently work in hospitals. However, these health professionals may also choose to work in schools, nursing homes, clinics, community centers, health care facilities, and clinics. They work with patients, physicians, and sometimes specific families. Most of the time, registered nurses are on their feet all day, and they may also work during weekends depending on the facility and the situation.
How to Become a Registered Nursing
To become a registered nurse, a person has to have a nursing diploma or degree – commonly through bachelor’s or associate’s degree nursing programs. A nursing diploma is less popular than a degree. Additionally, many organizations are calling for the diploma to be completely phased out. Registered nurses must also undergo and pass an exam to become a nurse.
Training & Certification Requirements
In order to become a registered nurse, students need to graduate from accredited programs, such as those that provide a nursing diploma, or bachelor’s degree. Registered nursing programs also need to prepare students to pass an NCLEX-RN examination. Upon graduation, nurses will need to sign up for an examination with the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, as all states within the US require employed registered nurses to have proper licensure.

Registered Nursing Job Outlook
The career of registered nursing is expected to see a significant amount of growth in the following years, with an expansion of around 19% expected from 2012 to 2022. Several reasons for this expected growth exist, including a wider availability of healthcare through the Affordable Care Act, an aging population, and the fact that a significant number of the current registered nurses in the system are currently making their way towards retirement. Nurses are necessary for educating patients on chronic health problems, and helping them to overcome illnesses in a range of different ways. Some experts suggest that the highest demand for registered nurses will come from facilities other than hospitals, such as long-term care centers and outpatient centers.
