The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for a Physical Therapist around the country.
What We Do
Most physical therapists are healthcare experts who apply rehabilitation and exercise techniques to the process of treating abnormalities or injuries that might limit a person’s ability to move as they should. Alongside increasing mobility and reducing pain, many physical therapists will work with patients to help prevent the onset, or reduce the symptoms of disability through healthy living techniques and fitness programs.
Work Environment
Physical therapists can work in a range of different environments, including their own personal practices if they have the right level of licensure and certification. Many physical therapists find employment within the offices of other doctors, in hospitals, home healthcare services, residential care or nursing facilities, and more.
How to Become a Physical Therapist
In order to become a physical therapist, you will need to begin by completing your doctoral program for physical therapy, which has been accredited by the commission on accreditation in physical therapy education. These programs often take three years to complete, and you will need to undergo supervised periods of clinical experience too. In order to first gain admittance into a DPT program, you will need to earn your bachelor’s degree, although some schools might offer combined undergraduate degrees with doctoral degree programs. The prerequisites for your undergraduate degree might include courses in human anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry, psychology, and physics.
Training & Certification Requirements
In order to legally work as a physical therapist within your chosen state, you will need to become licensed by the state in which you want to practice. After you have completed all of the necessary and accredited programs for physical therapy, candidates in all states across the United States will be required to pass the national physical therapy examination that is administered by the federation of state boards of physical therapy. This exam allows for the assessment of an applicant’s competency in the range of physical therapy theory, consultation and practice considerations. Physical therapists who might want to advance their opportunities in their chosen field might decide to obtain their certification in a specialty through the American board of physical therapy specialties. There are eight designations to choose from, including pulmonary, cardiovascular, neurology, geriatrics, clinical electrophysiology, sports, and orthopedics.
