The following page shows the career & education requirements, salary and job outlook for Physical Therapy Technician around the country.
What We Do
A physical therapy technician works together with physical therapists to ensure their job is done properly. They work mainly by ensuring all the relevant paperwork is completed and by making sure tools are available and in working order. They are not, however, physical therapist assistants, who actually work directly in providing care for patients. Rather, they are most often described as physical therapy aides, meaning that they focus on clerical duties, moving patients, and preparing a treatment area.
Work Environment
Physical therapy technicians work mainly in offices of audiologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, and physical therapists. They can also be found in private, local, and state hospitals, as well as in skilled nursing facilities. It is also becoming increasingly common for them to work in offices of physicians and in home health care services.
How to Become a Physical Therapy Technician
To become a physical therapy technician, it is generally recommended to complete an associate’s degree. Those who want to work as a physical therapy assistant (not aide) must also complete specialized certification. The technician, by contrast, is usually trained on the job. The Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education has accredited some 300 different associate’s degrees in the field of physical therapy. These programs usually take two years to complete, and they combine classroom education with real life experiences. While recommended to have this degree, most physical therapy technicians only complete their high school or GED diploma and receive on the job training to get sufficient clinical experience.
Training & Certification Requirements
Those who do want to become certified must pass the exam set out by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy. As stated, this is not a requirement for those who want to remain in a technician role, but it is certainly recommended for those who wish to advance their careers. Additionally, different states have their own regulations that must be adhered to as well.
